[19:56]<@Calum> Oh man, Linux is annoying me tonight, I don't know what I've done
[19:56]<@BC_Programming> When Linux is causing you trouble you often don't know what you did :P
[19:57]<@Calum> Indeed
[19:57]<@BC_Programming> What is it doing?
[19:58]<@Calum> I think I might ask my host to wipe & reinstall for me....basically it's just acting very oddly when I'm trying to install certain things, I can't explain it very well. I think I may have added or changed where it looks for updates, whatever that's called, ages and ages ago
[19:58]<@Calum> but I can't remember if I did or if that's actually the problem
[19:59]<@BC_Programming> ahh... yeah if you changed the place it looks for repos that can be a recipe for 'fun'
[19:59]<@Calum> I have a very vague memory that I might have done that, but that might've been on a different box
[20:00]<@Calum> I do know that this hasn't found any updates for a really long time and that it's running Ubuntu 13.04 so it's quite old
[20:00]<@BC_Programming> I seem to remember /etc/apt being related to updates somehow from when I ran Linux on my laptop for a while
[20:00]<@BC_Programming> not that I expect such a file would be easy to read and see issues in unless you are a mage
[20:02]<@Calum> Hmm. Well, There's a file called sources.list which seems to be related
[20:02]<@Calum> I just don't know if I've changed it, past me *should* have commented but...past me is not to be trusted
[20:04]<@BC_Programming> yeah might just want to have it reinstalled. Unless one of the other nixy folks here has any ideas of course
[20:05]<@Calum> Yeah, it's quite possible that I'm going to break it, I was thinking about upgrading the box anyway so I'll see...need to save some config files first
[20:05]<@Calum> all it currently does is run a distributed computing app that uses tons of data (hence an unrestricted 100/100 connection that isn't mine is quite useful) and a few other small bits but I was going to set it up as a game server too
[20:06]<@Calum> that first part sounds a bit dodgy, it actually isn't
[20:06]<@BC_Programming> yeah sure
[20:06]<@BC_Programming> secret is safe with me
[20:06]<@BC_Programming> :P
[20:06]<@Calum> hah
[20:07]<@Calum> it's a search engine actually, called Majestic-12
[20:07]<@Calum> so basically web crawling
[20:07]<@Calum> it's quite a cool project, based in the UK as well
[20:08]<@Calum> the payouts I get from being a shareholder cover my box's hosting costs which is quite cool
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> nice
[20:09]<@Calum> for reference I pay £3 a month so £9 a quarter isn't much hah
[20:09]<@Calum> but it's sort of interesting to be involved in anyway
[20:10]<@Calum> I did plan to use the server to learn Linux as well but that sort of fell by the wayside
[20:11]<@Calum> We do have a SCO Openserver system to decommision at work sometime soon which should be fun...my plan so far is "turn it off, leave it off, hide it/dispose of it"
[20:12]<@BC_Programming> get a tablecloth
[20:12]<@BC_Programming> "hey guys a new table!"
[20:12]<@Calum> hah
[20:12]<@Calum> it's already quite hidden to be fair, I think there's only me who really knows where it is
[20:12]<@Calum> would be a shame if it "just broke" one day
[20:13] * KindOne (KindOne@2CF07725.8847CC8D.4DC5B155.IP) Quit (Quit: Hiring PHP developers does not contribute to the quota of employees with disabilities.)
[20:21] * KindOne (KindOne@2CF07725.8847CC8D.4DC5B155.IP) has joined #glitchpc
[20:36]<@Calum> Well, that was painful....finally managed to log in and send a ticket to ask how much it'd cost to upgrade the OS, I remember there used to be a page with costs for different "interventions" by their tech team but it's since disappeared
[20:36]<@Calum> if it's cheap enough I'll stick where I am, otherwise I found a good deal on a better spec server for not a huge amount more so might upgradfe
